Cyclists, drivers and pedestrians have been involved in a frank exchange of views about sharing space on roads and pavements.

They spoke out after Dr Alison Hill, chairwoman of Oxford cycling campaign group Cyclox, revealed she had been the victim of a 'punishment pass', in which a driver deliberately drove too close to her bike as he passed in order to shake her up.

At the same time fellow cyclist Sam Spinks said after he was knocked off his £2,000 Marin Hybrid the driver asked if Mr Spinks' insurance could pay for damage to his car's wing mirror.

Cyclists and drivers on oxfordmail.co.uk have outlined their experiences while a pedestrian has also pointed out that cyclists can be a hazard to walkers.

The government, through local councils, has been investing money in new cycle lanes and road markings for cyclists.

Inconsequentialnoise said: "A little reminder that the reason we need safe, segregated space for pedestrians and cyclists from cars is because cars make our streets unsafe for people. They also routinely block roads so no one else can pass.

"Sure, people on bikes might momentarily slow you down because you choose to drive. You just need to wait until there's a safe place to pass."

But Know it all again! responded: "When will the OM be reporting a piece on the motorist sharing stories about experiences with bad cyclists, running red lights, scrapping down the side of cars, riding with no lights, riding on pavements, cycling in one way streets wrong way, pulling out of junctions without looking, etc etc."

Simon Mason weighed in with a list of reasons why he thought drivers were inconsiderate, saying: "Speeding, parking the wrong way at night, on yellow lines, on zig zags, outside schools, pavement parking, obstructing traffic by inconsiderate parking, driving while drunk, on mobile phones, with no car tax, no licence, no insurance, no MOT, illegal plates, overtaking on double lines, due care, bald tyres, faulty brakes, one eyed monsters, no rear lights, no brake lights, no indicators, fog light abuse, faulty steering, windscreen obscuration, darkly tinted windows, child seat abuse, no seatbelts, insecure load, one way street abuse, amber/red light jumping, cycle box abuse, bus lane abuse, box junction abuse, death by dangerous driving, excess smoke and noise from exhaust, duff suspension, leaking oil, cash for crash fiddles."

Andrew:Oxford added: "How about some pedestrian stories of poor behaviours?

"I've had ignorant cyclists shouting at me because they think that I should move out of the way or put down my umbrella to let them past on "shared space" pavements. The utter filth shouted by cyclists when we took the twin's double buggy along the towpath was shameful. It was one of those moments when you have to decide to walk on or help someone out of the river when she had been so busy looking back screaming abuse that she wasn't paying attention to the direction she was going in.

"It's not uncommon for cyclists to engage in "Punishment passes" with pedestrians either. The simplest thing to do at that point is to "aeroplane". My arm span is just short of 80cm, watch them panic, duck and swerve."

Mr Mason insisted that wing mirrors should now be called door mirrors.

He said: "Wing mirrors went out with log books, road tax and glove boxes. They are fixed to doors now and not the front wings."
