THREE entrepreneurial siblings have launched their own business selling face coverings, while also doing their bit to protect the environment.

Wright brothers Charlie, 11, and Woody, six, and their nine-year-old sister Hattie, have joined forces and set up School Bandanas, selling eco-friendly face masks.

The trio, who live in Steeple Aston west of Bicester, launched the business on Wednesday, with each youngster taking on an individual job.

Their mum Helen said Charlie was in charge of public relations, as he emails customers who have placed orders, while Hattie is in quality control as she has the neatest writing so writes out addresses and labels, and Woody has overseen market research.

Mrs Wright said: “They’ve been talking about it for ages, and it took a while to source everything.

“The face coverings are made from recycled plastic bottles, after the kids had looked around for a place that would make them, and found one in Scotland.

“Like a lot of young people are, they’re really passionate about the environment.

“There’s lots of pollution with the single-use masks getting dumped and they’re very big on the environment and Greta Thunberg.”

In addition to the environmental impact, the siblings have also had an eye-opening experience to the effect of coronavirus.

Mrs Wright said: “Their dad is a neurosurgeon and he was alternating between that and the Covid wards in London throughout the main lockdown period.

“The kids didn’t see much of him but knowing what he was doing brought them greater awareness.

“Like all children, they haven’t been seeing much of their friends and grandparents, and are aware of the situation, and the importance of having to wash their hands regularly.

“The kids knew they’d be getting the school bus and they’ll have to wear masks.

“The masks that hook around the ears can be quite uncomfortable, so they’ve now got to this point where they’re running a little business between them.”

The siblings sold 40 of the face coverings on the first day and have been promoting the business on an Instagram page which Mrs Wright has been running.

They also took part in a ‘fete at the gate’ in Steeple Aston on Saturday after the normal village fete was cancelled because of coronavirus.

“I’ve told friends about it and everyone’s been loving it, especially the environmental aspect, when you see the single-use masks discarded in the street,” Mrs Wright said.

“The coverings are really versatile and colourful. As well as being used as a face mask, they can be used as bandanas, which the boys quite like, or like an old fashioned Alice band.

“They chose the colours that they thought would be the most popular and then named the colours.

They’re all quite entrepreneurial and have researched prices.”

The siblings settled on a price of £6 each for the bandanas, with £1 from every sale going to the Woodland Trust, Charlie’s favourite charity.
