Dominic Hare, chief executive officer, said: “This beautiful and historic site holds a special place in many people’s memories and we would love to be able to add those stories to the wider history of the palace itself.

“We are also very keen to hear from former members of staff and those who have worked on the estate over the years.”

The palace officially first opened its doors to the public in 1950 with visitors paying half a crown admission.

About 100,000 came to see the palace in its first year. Staff welcomed more than 920,000 visitors last year.

Mr Hare added: "Some aspects of the visitor experience have changed out of all recognition, while others remain virtually identical to that first day back in 1950.

“Hopefully we will be able to piece together a tapestry of words and pictures representing every decade we have been open to form a fascinating overview of the development of a visitor attraction over time."
