A PROLIFIC thief who was caught stealing meat from an Oxfordshire supermarket will be sentenced today.

Sophie Williams appeared at Oxford Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old of Falcon Close, Oxford, faced one charge of theft by shoplifting and at the same hearing asked that a further charge of theft by shoplifting be taken into account.

Williams pleaded guilty to both counts at that hearing.

Prosecutors Clare Barclay said that Williams stole £150 worth of meat at Sainsbury's on December 19 last year.

She also stole a further £161.25 worth of items from the same Sainsbury's store on December 29.

The court heard she made 'full admissions at interview' and said she 'knew it was dishonest and probably sold most of the meat she had stolen.'

Williams also has numerous previous convictions for shoplifting and was previously handed a suspended jail term of 16 weeks prison, suspended for 18 months.

That suspended sentence, which she received last year, was for a total of 11 offences of theft by shoplifting.

In mitigation her defence solicitor Scott Primmer said his client had expressed remorse and said she was 'disappointed and annoyed at herself.'

He said that the latest offending represented a 'relapse.'

He went on to ask magistrates to adjourn her sentencing hearing so that a report can be prepared by the National Probation Service.

That report will explore all sentencing options.

Magistrates agreed to adjourn the case and her final sentencing hearing is expected to take place today.

She was released on bail in the meantime.
