OXFORD residents will be able to recycle more of their waste ‘on-the-go’ in the future.

New recycling stations are set to be introduced across the city, following a pilot scheme to recycle more coffee cups by the city council which will begin in the new year.

In a written question ahead of Monday’s council meeting Councillor Mohammed Altaf-Khan asked what was being done to improve the recycling of street litter following the pilot.

Cabinet member Nigel Chapman said the council hoped to recycle more plastic bottles, cans, glass and paper at new recycling stations in the city.

He said recycling bins for a variety of waste would be introduced alongside the coffee cup bin pilot scheme.

Mr Chapman added: “I would add that much better than recyclable coffee cups are re-usable ones, which often give the owner a reduction in the cost of their coffee or tea.

“We need to encourage their use across the city, especially with those companies who are not currently offering any financial incentive to those who have purchased them.”

Coffee cup recycling bins were first announced in October, with the aim of recycling 650,000 cups in a year.
