A MOTORCYCLIST who sparked a six-mile 140mph police chase on the A34 has been jailed for dangerous driving.

Dale Harry, a man of "impeccable character", started a four-month prison sentence on Thursday after he spotted a police car and realised he was uninsured to drive his motorcycle and attempted to flee.

The speedy endeavour triggered a blue light police pursuit on April 27.

A judge heard how experienced police saw dangerous overtaking and undertaking by the 29-year-old and considered it to be "suicidal".

A four-minute dashcam video shown in court, saw Harry, of Merganser Drive in Bicester, racing at speeds of up to 140mph on the 70mph road.

Prosecuting at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, Anne-Marie Critchley said: "When he realised a police car was behind him, he panicked because he was uninsured and sped off to avoid being captured."

Adding: "Footage shows him overtaking and undertaking cars and dangerously swerving the vehicle across a junction...the driving is alarming".

An extract from report by one of the police officer's involved stated that the chase covered a considerable distance of six miles from the A34 to the M40 and onto the A41.

Akaal Sidhu, defending, said: "This is very out of character for Harry. When he was shown back the footage he was shocked and broke down. He has never been in trouble with police before and his remorse is genuine. He repeatedly said he was sorry.

"Mr Harry is not a boy racer, he is a family man and dreams of becoming a chef. He can deal with the consequences but his family can't as he is the sole breadwinner, it will bring hardship on his family."

Harry's family wept in the gallery as Judge Maria Lamb said: "This was a prolonged period of driving at speeds of up to 140mph. This was not just momentary but six miles. It was clear you knew that you were being followed.

"You were seen swerving in and out of traffic, undertaking at the roundabout and this is all aggravated by the fact that you did not have insurance.

"Had there been an accident this would have affected not only you and your family but the family of the victim as well.

"You have many impeccable character references, you have had a difficult background and have outstanding achievements. It gives me no pleasure but you will need an immediate custodial sentence and the implications will be great for your family.

"I have kept the sentence as short as possible in accordance with my public duty."

Harry was sentenced to four months in prison, a 14-month driving disqualification and will be subject to an extended test.
