One driver who passed the scene said there had been a 'nasty head-on collision between two cars'.
Traffic was severe at either side but had cleared by 8.30pm, though the road remained closed for some time after.
The closure stretched from the large roundabout connecting the A40 with the B4047 Burford Road, to the turn-off for Swinbrook.
