A NEW playgroup is now operating out of Neyland Nursery in St Clements Road as the first phase of the Flying Start expansion project.

Flying Start is the Welsh Governments Flagship Early Years programme for families with children under four years. The programme aims to make a decisive difference to the life chances of children in the areas it runs.

Neyland Nursery will offer free quality part time child care to eligible children.

Among the organisations providing support to families are Plant Dewi, the Family Information Service, and local speech and language therapists.

Pembrokeshire County Councillor Simon Hancock, who officially opened the facility on Wednesday (25th March), said he was delighted to welcome the flagship early years programme to Neyland.

“I’m very pleased to open this wonderful facility today,” said Councillor Hancock, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Well-Being, and Equalities.

“It’s great to see the children enjoying themselves in such a bright and stimulating environment, and I’m sure they and their families will benefit from many new opportunities and extra support in the years ahead.”

Phase 2 of the expansion project is scheduled to be complete In September. A brand new Flying Start Centre will be opened next door to the playgroup.

“The Centre will have health visitors and other professionals on hand to provide advice and guidance” said Helen Goodridge, Flying Start Manager and Integrated Family Support Team Manager.

“Families will be also able to access a range of groups such as baby massage, parent and toddler, play and parenting programmes.”

The first Flying Start programme in Pembrokeshire was set up in Pembroke and Pembroke Dock in 2007, and last year it was rolled out to Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Hakin.
