SANDY JARDINE came across some outstanding sides in a career at Rangers that spanned 18 years and 674 games.
But he reckons the 1973 Ajax side that he faced in the inaugural European Super Cup was the finest he's ever seen.
Jardine's memories of that two-legged affair will come flooding back this evening when Walter Smith's men face the Dutch cracks at Ibrox.
He said: "They had Cruyff, Neeskens and Krol as the stars - but they were just a top class side throughout. I'd say they were the best team I played against.
"The Celtic 1967 side was right up there, as was the Bayern Munich team we beat in 1972 en route to Barcelona, but Ajax were the best.
"We lost 3-1 at Ibrox in the first game in in what was a masterclass from them. Over in Holland we did better and lost 3-2 in the second match, and it was a great experience."
Rangers have donated £25,000 from tonight's gate receipts to the Barcelona squad's kitty as they spend this year marking the 35th anniversary of their Cup- Winners' Cup glory "It was a great gesture from the club, and the 35th anniversary year is something all the lads are enjoying," said Jardine.
