An exhibition of prints and drawings by Pablo Picasso opens today at Dean Gallery, Edinburgh.

Picasso on Paper explores the artist's work in graphic media, bringing together drawings, etchings, lithographs, linocuts and woodcuts, created over a period of more than 70 years.

It ranges from a work in pastels made while he was still a teenager, to an ink drawing made in 1971, when he was 89.

The exhibition of more than 120 works will centre on the world-famous collection of the Staatsgalerie Museum in Stuttgart, which is lending nearly 100 items, including 65 prints, 15 drawings and 10 illustrated books.

There has not been a major Picasso exhibition in Scotland before this summer. Another in-depth exhibition, highlighting other specific aspects of the artist's career, is already under way in Edinburgh.

Picasso: Fired with Passion, examines his work from 1947 to 1961 and is the first significant showing of his ceramics in the UK for more than a decade. It is at the National Museum of Scotland until October 28. Picasso on Paper runs until September 23.

A National Galleries spokes-man said: "Picasso's influence extends to every aspect of the visual art: no other artist had such a profound impact on the art of his time."
