August 3.

Housebuilding on a large scale will get the UK out of recession, but

it must all be for rent, affordable rent.

Margaret Thatcher's obsession with a property-owning democracy and the

application of the community charge without appropriate increases in the

higher rates of income tax caused exorbitant increases in the cost of

building land and house prices, with first-time buyers being shamelessly

ripped off.

That was the direct cause of the recession, which we then exported to

other countries.

To give further aid for home ownership will be disastrous.
