The sudden death of John G Forsyth marked a sad loss for the world of education. John graced the teaching profession with efficiency, dignity, and humanity.
A native of Bothwell, he was educated at Uddingston Grammar School, where he achieved the distinction of winning the Dux Medal in 1947. He continued his studies at Glasgow University, where in 1952 he graduated with honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. Thereafter he attended Jordanhill Training College where he gained his Diploma in Education.
Like so many of his generation, his career was then interrupted by National Service where his teaching abilities were put to use by the Royal Artillery at the Army Apprentices' School in Harrogate.
John's first teaching appointment was at Glasgow High School. After a spell at Hutcheson's Grammar School, he was appointed principal teacher of mathematics at Kelvinside Academy. Thereafter he progressed to Hamilton Grammar School and in 1972 was appointed rector of Coatbridge High School, where he continued until his retirement in 1991.
He will be remembered with much respect by staff and pupils, for whom a quiet word of encouragement was often offered. His commitment to Coatbridge High School was complete; by example he shaped attitudes, he identified expectations, and he provided outstanding leadership.
In 1958 he was married to Sheila, and came to live in the Rutherglen area. A keen churchman, John served for many years in the management of Stonelaw Parish Church, where his wise guidance and financial acumen were much appreciated. John touched life at many points.
His love of music found fulfilment in his longstanding association with the Lanarkshire Orchestra Society, helping to promote the musical abilities and talents of many schoolchildren within the Lanarkshire area. He was a dedicated chairman of the society for many years.
Having been an active Scout leader in Bothwell, he was a life-long supporter of the Guide and Scout association. A keen philatelist, he was an enthusiastic member of the Caledonian Philatelic Society. Perhaps above all, John was a fam-ily man, who never allowed his
interests and commitments to detract from his home and family life. He will be much missed in the communities where he served so faithfully.
John Forsyth is survived by his wife, Sheila, daughter, Anne, son, Graham, and two grandsons.
