RedundanT steelworkers will be offered the chance to re-train for other jobs under a scheme launched last night.
Local authorities and training groups have joined forces with the main steel union, the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation, to create courses ranging from child-minding to computer programming.
The launch comes days after British Steel announced it would cut 1600 jobs in the next six months because of the global economic crisis.
