THE demand to do something to improve the A34 seem to go on forever.
But, before spending a lot of money on this road, the priority should be to finish the electrification of the rail links between the South Coast and the Midlands. Where have the lorries that traverse this road originated?
I would have expected continental trucks to use the Channel Tunnel, so are they arriving by ferry or are they used to pick up containers that have been shipped in?
Both the lorries and containers could be moved by rail, but I do see a problem. Some businesses rely on a fixed date for deliveries and, if this delivery date is affected by train timetables, rail might not be acceptable.
