The overloaded A34 is a fly in the ointment
IT SEEMS remarkable how Harwell has changed over time. My first memories of this place were as a First World War airfield housing Vickers Wellington bomber, although I believe its origins date back to the 1930s. On D-Day it was a base for Airspeed Horsa gliders, which would be used to transport troops to France – presumably the Wellingtons were to be used as tugs.
Today, along with Milton, Chilton, Culham and Didcot we have, what some call Oxfordshire Silicon Valley – who wants another one along the Oxford-Cambridge corridor?
However, there is a fly in the ointment, the overloaded A34. Perhaps a link road via Didcot to the M40 would be the answer.
