SOUTH Newington rider Gareth Hughes has won first and third prizes at the Teviot Elementary Open class at this year's Event Insurance Services Winter Dressage Championships at Solihull Riding Club.

He took gold riding Timlei, a seven-year-old gelding owned by Aspen Grove Dressage, and bronze riding his second horse, Duvie.

He said: "We have had Timlei since he was a three-year-old and, and now, four years later, he is starting to show real talent.

"Standing at 18.2hh he is a giant and has a lot of strength and power through his movement. His sheer size catches the eye but he also possesses natural ring presence."

He added: "The fields at Aspen Grove Dressage in South Newington are filled with young horses and range from novices to top level competition horses. Life on the yard is very busy.

"I aim to move Timlei up through the grades, and his straightforward character and trainability makes him a pleasure to ride. We have very high hopes for him."
