A TEDDY bear, given to a nurse by a wounded soldier in 1915, has been sold at auction for £13,000.

The Steiff bear went under the hammer last week at Holloways in Banbury and fetched more than four times its estimated value. The bear was a token of gratitude given to the seller's grandmother, who was nursing the injured solder in the First World War.

It had been handed down through several generations of the same family since then, and was in need of some repair.

Holloways spokesman Nick Williams said: "The dealer who bought the bear commented on the quality of the plush material and is confident it can be restored."

A letter from the unnamed seller said: "I grew up with the bear. I cannot remember a time when Mr Bear was not around, and he will be sorely missed."
