ART lovers from across the world were bidding for four Russian pictures at Holloways auctioneers.
The watercolours by Adolf Iosifovich Charlemagne were all signed and dated 1863 and show different types of horse-drawn transport.
Holloways received bids from New York and St Petersberg, which eventually saw the pictures sold for £8,800 - despite their estimated value being £2,000 to £3,000.
The pictures were obtained by the seller's father in the 1920s and are thought to have come from refugees after the 1905 Russian Revolution.
Nick Williams, of Holloways, said: "The irony is that despite bids from the USA and Russia, the pictures were eventually sold to a UK buyer."
