EVIDENCE of Oxfordshire's connections with the slave trade are to go on display at Banbury Library.

Books about slavery will also be on show as part of national bi-centenary celebrations of a Bill to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire.

The exhibition will be launched on Monday.

Original documents, drawn from Oxfordshire County Council's record office, include pages from church registers that show the baptisms and burials of slaves in Oxfordshire from the 17th to the 19th Century The documents are accompanied by previously unknown information on Oxfordshire families who had connections to the British colonies in the Caribbean, plus examples of physical evidence for the county's connections with slavery.

Don Seale, executive member for cultural services, said: "This exhibition is an excellent opportunity to find out more about a practice that should be stamped out."
