HENLEY Hawks’ largest travelling crowd for more than a decade roared them on to a 20-14 victory at third-placed Richmond.
This was Hawks’ first win against Richmond and gave them a six-point cushion in sixth place.
Full back James Comben kicked Henley ahead with a fifth-minute penalty, while Richmond threatened through wing James Greenwood.
Hawks went close through No 8 Tom Stradwick’s 40-metre burst before centre Danny Wells dashed over for the opening try, converted by Comben – after Richmond fly half Ross Broadfoot’s penalty had levelled.
Some great forward surges allowed scrum half Jack Shaylor to touch down by the posts, Comben converting for a 17-3 half-time lead.
Richmond came out fired up, adding a Broadfoot penalty and a try from Greenwood.
The hosts attempted to maul their way to further tries, but Hawks defended well, lock Dave Clements impressing.
Comben and Broadfoot added penalties, while props Sam Beckett (Henley) and Owen Gregory (Richmond) were sin-binned.
