JORDAN Gill produced a four-try spectacular as Oxford RL defeated Coventry Bears 28-24 at Abingdon’s Tilsley Park on Saturday.

In Oxford’s penultimate Kingstone Press League 1 Shield encounter, Gill opened the scoring after two minutes, when he pounced on Paul Emannuelli’s pass for a converted try.

But Coventry replied with scores from Hayden Freeman and Jamahl Hunte to go 8-6 in front.

Oxford’s response was devastating.

Callum Windley kicked for Gill to out jump Freeman and touch down.

The home side used the same tactic twice more in the first half, with Gill getting his third and Harvey Burnett also touching down.

An error from Freeman allowed Gill to gather just before half-time and race in for his fourth, which was improved for a 24-8 interval lead.

With coach Tom Tsang’s half-time team talk ringing in their ears, Coventry scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half through Freeman and Matt Reid, one of which was converted.

But the home side took control again as Casey Canterbury burrowed over from close range after 52 minutes to give his side some breathing space at 28-18.

Coventry set up a grand finale when Brad Delaney latched onto a perfectly-placed Emanuelli kick for a converted try with four minutes remaining.

However, Oxford defended strongly to secure their deserved victory.
