OXFORD RL secured back-to-back wins for the first time in 14 months in convincingly beating Hemel Stags 46-10 at Tilsley Park.

The victory in the Kingstone Press League 1 Shield was also the Blues’ biggest since their formation in 2012.

Oxford ran in nine tries, with Nathan Kitson crossing for a hat-trick, while Scott Fleming (2), Jordan Siddons, Marcus Brooker, Josh Nathanial and Adam Flintham also went over.

The hosts were on the scoresheet first through Siddons on 12 minutes, with Kitson adding the extras, before Fleming made it 10-0 with an unconverted try.

Hemel tried a needless offload in the tackle and paid the price as Casey Canterbury picked up the loose ball and Brooker pounced on his grubber to score.

The visitors fought back, with Malakhi Lloyd-Jones forcing his way over and Ben Stead adding the extras.

But Oxford took a 20-6 lead into the break, with Kitson converting his own try.

Hemel started the second half the better, but the Blues weathered the storm and added to their lead.

Nathanial went over out wide and, despite converting, Kitson was ordered to take the conversion attempt again as a touch judge was not in position. He missed at the second time of asking.

Kitson, though, was on the scoreboard moments later, going over for a fine try, before Flintham and Fleming also crossed to all but put the match to bed.

Harrison Brough’s unconverted score was merely a consolation for Hemel as Kitson completed his hat-trick and kicked the extras.

Oxford bid to make it three wins on the bounce when they host Newcastle Thunder at home on Saturday.
