OXFORD United Women started 2022 in familiar fashion as Beth Lumsden’s double secured a 2-0 win over Cardiff City Ladies.

The U’s top-scorer struck her 15th and 16th goals of the season to keep Liam Gilbert’s side second in FA Women’s National League Southern Premier.

Cardiff, meanwhile, returned to Wales shaken after they were the victims of a mindless act on their way home.

A brick was thrown off a flyover on the M4 and crashed through the sunroof of their coach. Thankfully, there were no injuries.

Back on the pitch, United made four changes to the XI that beat league leaders Ipswich Town in their final game before Christmas.

Rose Kite returned in goal and Emily Wallace came in at left back, while Carly Johns and Lily Stevens were back in midfield.

United started brightly and had two opportunities to take the lead in the first four minutes.

Riva Casley fired over the crossbar after a free-kick found her unmarked at the back post, before Daisy McLachlan crashed a shot off the woodwork.

Lumsden then saw a header shovelled clear by Wales goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan, but she broke the deadlock in the 25th minute.

Wallace was released down the left and crossed to the former Charlton Athletic player, who turned and fired home.

United were less dominant after the break and Cardiff’s Lucy Seahill shot just wide within moments of the restart.

But the U’s looked capable of adding to their lead and did so with 15 minutes left.

The same duo were responsible as Lumsden volleyed home Wallace’s cross from the left, making it nine wins from nine at Court Place Farm.
