BANBURY United could not pull off an Emirates FA Cup shock in front of the TV cameras as Barrow’s Football League class eventually told.

Josh Gordon’s eighth-minute opener put the visitors in control, but the Puritans stayed in the game even after Offrande Zanzala doubled the lead after the break.

The Sky Bet League Two side finished with a flourish, though, as Ollie Banks scored from the penalty spot and Jordan Stevens added a fourth moments later.

It meant the sell-out home crowd and those watching on ITV4 did not see the upset they wanted, as Banbury fell short in the first round for the second year running.

The defeat also brings to an end their 19-match unbeaten run, but the Puritans bow out with their heads held high.

Andy Whing began with the same line-up that started last Saturday’s Buildbase FA Trophy win at Corby Town, but Barrow boss Mark Cooper made four changes.

Stevens, Zanzala, Matt Platt and James Jones came in, while former Oxford United loanee Joe Grayson started in defence.

The capacity crowd and the TV cameras made it a special occasion and Banbury’s fans increased the atmosphere before kick-off.

Their higher-division opponents needed to stop the home side building momentum on the pitch and Gordon almost scored inside three minutes, but failed to get enough on Stevens’ cross.

The forward soon gave Barrow the lead though, latching on to Zanzala’s flick-on to fire across Ben Taylor and into the far corner.

Banbury’s heads did not drop, as you would expect from a team yet to lose this season.

Morgan Roberts almost punished Paul Farman for hesitating as a long ball came his way, but a defender got back to clear after he poked the ball past the Barrow goalkeeper.

Opposite number Ben Taylor tipped Robbie Gotts’ header over just before the half-hour mark, after Remeao Hutton had beaten Sam Brown on the byline to float in the cross.

Brown’s long throws were giving Barrow something to think about, but otherwise Banbury were in the game without working Farman.

Chris Wreh and Ben Acquaye were lively, yet several times the final ball let the Puritans down after they had created an opening.

A free-kick almost found its way to Kelvin Langmead after the break, before Taylor produced an excellent save at the other end.

Gotts broke from his own half and outpaced Connor Roberts to go through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who made himself big to block the shot.

Connor Brown replaced Hutton for Barrow and the visitors had their second almost instantly.

Langmead thought Taylor was behind him as the ball dropped out of the sky, but he got his bearings wrong and the hesitation allowed Zanzala to nip in and lob the goalkeeper.

Henry Landers came on for Jack Stevens, while there was trouble behind the Barrow goal as a group of Banbury fans tried to reach the visiting supporters.

That corner seemed more interested in watching the away section than the pitch, where the Puritans continued to probe in the hope of pulling one back.

Ethan Johnston replaced Tom Sharpe in an attacking change, only for Barrow to strike twice in the final ten minutes.

Captain Banks made the game safe from the penalty spot, sending Taylor the wrong way after the goalkeeper brought down Zanzala.

Four minutes later the visitors had another as Banbury left themselves open at the back, with substitute Josh Kay squaring the ball for Stevens to fire home.
