EDDIE Pepperell’s late surge surely came too late at St Andrews.

With six holes of his second round at the Hero Open to play, the Abingdon golfer was six-over par and a long way short of making the cut.

But the Frilford Heath member picked up four shots in four holes, including an eagle at the par-four second, to reach the clubhouse at level-par for his round.

It saw Pepperell end the day two-over for the tournament, three shots outside of the projected cut, although a three-and-a-half hour delay to the day’s play means the action is still ongoing.

Starting from the tenth, the damage was done early on for the 30-year-old.

A bogey at the 13th was followed by a triple-bogey six at the 17th.

Pepperell’s late charge left him in with a slim chance, with several golfers not starting their second rounds until late afternoon.
