SARAH King's first goal for Oxford United Women proved the difference against Charlton Athletic.

The midfielder tapped home after seven minutes to give the U's victory over their Championship opponents and seal a second successive pre-season win.

It was another productive 90 minutes for Liam Gilbert's side as they prepare for their FA Women's National League Premier South opener against Gillingham on Sunday, August 15.

Two new signings made their mark to put United in front, King dispatching the rebound after Beth Lumsden's shot was saved.

Goalkeeper Paris Sercombe produced a series of stops to ensure the U's reached half-time ahead, before Gilbert made several substitutions early in the second half.

Rose Kite replaced Sercombe and she was alert to sweep the ball off the toes of a Charlton attacker just after the hour mark, but the first of two excellent chances fell to the visitors with 20 minutes left.

The ball pinged around the goalmouth following a corner and the away side could so easily have scored, were it not for the U's goalkeeper's rapid reactions to divert the ball to safety.

Kite was forced off through injury with ten minutes left and Sercombe returned to the fray, before Charlton went close again late on.

A cross found its way to an unmarked attacker at the back post, but the visiting player could not direct her shot on target.

Kayleigh Hines headed wide in the closing seconds, but United held on to avenge their Vitality Women's FA Cup fourth round defeat to Charlton in April.
