OXFORD United have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Dan Agyei – and he was not the only striker watching on at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

The 22-year-old will have to wait for his debut, having had only a minimal pre-season after turning down a new contract at Burnley.

But Agyei will have been impressed by what he saw in the U’s 1-0 win over highly-fancied Peterborough United.

And the display cannot have failed to catch the eye of Matty Taylor, who was spotted at the ground.

The front man left the U’s a decade ago but now appears surplus to requirements at Bristol City and looks to be available for a loan.

While Marcus Browne watched his former side last month before going on to join Middlesbrough, United head coach Karl Robinson admitted there were targets at the game.

And the performance will have served as a useful recruitment tool.

Robinson said: “There were two or three players here who we’re trying to bring in.

“I think if you were watching it would be a case of ‘where do I fit in?’

“We look a very good team and we will excite people this year, but only if we work hard.”

He added: “I don’t think we have superstars, I think we’ve got a great group of men.

“We’ve come up against a team who I think once they get going not many will live with.

“We’ve played two of the top three favourites to go up automatically and to take four points is nice, but we’ve got a lot more still to do.”

Although he is not ready yet, United have high hopes for Agyei.

On top of a three-year deal, as he is under 24 they had to agree a compensation fee for Burnley.

Robinson knows they are buying potential, but the raw ingredients look promising.

He said: “We took him through his paces on Friday and he ticked all of our physical data.

“We’ve got a power watt bike test that we do, which he broke (the record). We’ve got a five-metre speed test which he broke.

“He’s probably the most powerful in the club and he’s the fastest.

“We know he’s got to improve on his touch and he knows there are parts of his game that have to be better, but he certainly has all the physical capabilities to be a good footballer.”

Agyei, who had several temporary spells away from Turf Moor, said: “With loanees it’s sometimes a bit hard to settle and adjust.

“Now I can completely focus on Oxford and try to help as much as possible.

“To be honest it wasn’t that hard a decision.

“When I heard that Oxford were interested it was really no-brainer to come here and play regular football compared to playing in the under 23s. I couldn’t wait.”
