AHEAD of each of United's Sky Bet League One games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

August 20, 2016: Oxford United 2, Peterborough 1

CHRIS Maguire became an internet hit for his comical celebration after dispatching a 93rd-minute penalty to down Peterborough.

Posh goalkeeper Ben Alnwick had tried to put the U's forward off by telling the Scot where he was going to place the spot-kick, so Maguire marked his winner by standing on the goal line and diving.

Videos of Maguire's celebration went viral, with one YouTube clip watched almost 200,000 times, but the forward admitted he was surprised at the interest.

He said: “The keeper tried to mug me off a bit, so it was just a bit tongue-in-cheek back.

“There was no disrespect, just a spur of the moment thing.

“On Saturday night my phone kept going as everyone saw it and the next thing I knew it was all over the place. I thought it would be quite funny and it has been.”

More importantly for United, it was their first Sky Bet League One win of the season – and their first in the third tier since 2001.

Michael Appleton's side went ahead 13 seconds after half time, when Wes Thomas fired a deflected strike past Alnwick.

But the visitors levelled on 62 minutes, with Tom Nichols's ruthless finish from eight yards ending an intricate move.

Peterborough could have won it just three minutes from time, but U's keeper Simon Eastwood somehow clawed the ball off the line to prevent a Josh Ruffels own goal.

Instead, the stage was set for Maguire's goal – and celebration – to grab the headlines.
