ASK Oxford United fans to think of the League Cup and most will cast their minds back to the club's greatest day at Wembley in 1986.

While winning the competition 33 years ago is hard to top, the club have been involved in other memorable games down the years.

If tonight's tie against Peterborough is anything like first round matches from recent years, it will be an eventful evening.

2018: Oxford United 2, Coventry City 0

Oxford Mail:

UNITED grabbed a much-needed victory at this stage 12 months ago, thanks to strikes from summer signings Marcus Browne and Gavin Whyte.

The U's had lost their opening two league games of the 2018/19 season and Karl Robinson rung the changes before the visit of Coventry City.

The gamble paid off, with Browne and Whyte scoring either side of half-time to send United through to the second round.

After beating Newport County, the club were rewarded with a sell-out home tie against Premier League champions Manchester City, performing creditably in a 3-0 defeat.

2017: Oxford United 3, Cheltenham Town 4

Oxford Mail:

THE U's lost out in a seven-goal thriller as they were beaten by Cheltenham Town after extra-time.

Pep Clotet's side went 3-1 up at half-time, with Spanish midfielder Xemi scoring his first goal for the club.

But United were pegged back to 3-3 in the second half, before Mo Eisa bagged the winner in the 98th minute.

2016: Birmingham City 0, Oxford United 1

Oxford Mail:

ONE year before the Cheltenham debacle, United were on the right end of some EFL Cup extra-time drama at Birmingham City.

With the game seemingly heading to penalties, Liam Sercombe popped up to head a 120th-minute winner to send the travelling fans wild.

The U's faced Championship opposition again in the next round in the form of Brighton & Hove Albion, but went down 4-2 at home.

2015: Brentford 0, Oxford United 4

Oxford Mail:

OUTSIDE the glory years of the 1980s, United's visit to Griffin Park in 2015 must surely rank as one of the club's highlights in the competition.

The U's raced into a 3-0 lead after just 12 minutes in an extraordinary start against Brentford, with Liam Sercombe and Danny Hylton scoring the first two.

Kemar Roofe hit the third with a spectacular strike from 45 yards, before Johnny Mullins added a fourth after half-time.

They could not recreate their heroics in the second round, losing 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday.

2014: Bristol City 1, Oxford United 2

Oxford Mail:

WHEN United went 1-0 down to Bristol City after just two minutes in the first round in 2014, it did not look like it would be a memorable night for the U's.

But Michael Appleton's side shrugged off the early setback and thought they had equalised through Junior Brown, only for the offside flag to halt the celebrations.

Carlton Morris drew the U's level shortly after half-time, before Danny Hylton slotted home three minutes from time.

The next round was just as memorable as 2,000 fans travelled to The Hawthorns for a tie with Premier League West Bromwich Albion, but United were edged out 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
