OXFORD United have made teenage full back Kevin Berkoe their first signing of the summer.

The defender, who plays predominantly on the left, turns 18 in July and joins after a two-year spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Berkoe, who came through the youth ranks at Chelsea, is expected to start out with the U’s under 23 squad with a view to challenging for a place in the senior side.

U’s boss Karl Robinson said: “Look at his pedigree and you can see he has a lot of ability and now he has the chance to push on and force his way in to the first team here.

“He is quick, technically very good and I know there were a number of clubs looking at him so we are really happy that he sees his future at Oxford.

“He has Josh Ruffels ahead of him and Michael Elechi coming through as well, so we have good competition in that position which is really encouraging.”

Sunderland showed an interest earlier this season, handing him a trial in March.

But United made an impression when he faced them in the Premier League Cup, where Wolves progressed from the group.

He said: “They were very impressive, so now I want to try and force my way into the first team here because it’s a club that gives youngsters that opportunity.”

Berkoe also made 12 appearances for Wolves this season in the U18 Premier League.
