OXFORD United are eager to sign off on a high today – but Jamie Hanson admits the squad know it’s a case of what could have been.

The U’s visit Luton Town (5.30pm) looking to end their Sky Bet League One campaign in style at rivals bidding to be crowned champions.

Despite being deep in a relegation battle for most of the season, Karl Robinson’s side have turned things around in the past few months and are guaranteed a top-half finish.

United have not lost to a top-six side since their defeat to Luton seven months ago, beating Charlton Athletic and drawing with Doncaster Rovers in the past fortnight.

Those results are part of a nine-game unbeaten run – and the U’s would love to reach double figures.

Hanson said: “If we had started this run three or four games earlier then we could have been near the play-offs.

“We know we’re capable of it.

“Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday and all the fans and staff can go away in the summer thinking positively.”

The Hatters are assured of promotion, but a recent stutter means the long-time leaders are only top on goal difference, so need to match Barnsley’s result at Bristol Rovers today to claim the title.

But after they were responsible for one of United’s lowest moments of the season – a stoppage-time winner at the Kassam Stadium in October – Hanson admits that is likely to be mentioned before the game at a sold-out Kenilworth Road.

“That hurt a lot of people with it being in the last minute,” he said.

“I think that’s in the back of everyone’s minds, to go there and prove a point.

“We’re obviously the underdogs.

“It’s going to be a great atmosphere, but it would be nice if we could cause a little bit of an upset because all the Luton fans will be expecting their side to walk all over us.

“But we’ve been on a great run and hopefully we can carry it on by putting in a performance.

“I don’t see why we can’t go there and get something.”

If Rob Dickie recovers from illness he is due to return, with Nico Jones on stand-by to continue in the side if the centre back is unavailable, while Gavin Whyte could be rested.

Danny Hylton is unlikely to face his former side after the Luton striker underwent a minor knee operation last month.
