OXFORD United’s ability to match the intensity of a promotion challenger was a big boost for head coach Karl Robinson.

The 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic involved not only coming from behind, but also playing with a numerical disadvantage for 20 minutes.

Unlike the Addicks, the home side had nothing tangible riding on the result, but they were still able to raise their game.

Robinson said: “Charlton had something to play for and so did we – our personal pride and our determination to play for the club.

“I know we’ve let a lot of fans down this season, but (since October) our form is top six.

“It shows you what might have been if we’d had these players fit through the whole season.”

He added: “I thought our players were really hungry for the fight and they couldn’t have done any more.”

There were plenty of controversial moments for referee Darren Drysdale to handle.

Robinson felt the decision to send off Chris Solly – making the game

ten-a-side after Simon Eastwood’s red card – was harsh.

But he was in complete agreement with the official over George Lapslie’s booking after the substitute, as last man, hauled down Jerome Sinclair, before Luke Garbutt had an effort saved.

“The referee got that bang on,” Robinson said.

“The ruling is he got the yellow for the foul. The second yellow to make it a red would be for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

“But he played advantage. We had the chance to score, rather than using the red card.

“You’d say it was good refereeing, but I don’t think he’s seen Garbs’s finishing.”
