Karl Robinson admitted to feeling a pang of frustration after Oxford United’s winning run was halted, but the per-formance gave the head coach reason for cheer.

The goalless draw with a dogged AFC Wimbledon denied the U’s a fifth straight league victory – something they have not done in a single Football League season for 23 years.

They arguably carved out more openings than in most of the previous four matches, but could not find a way past an in-form Dons goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

If United were still scrapping against relegation, this would have been a worrying result, but with their Sky Bet League One safety all-but guaranteed Robinson was not going to lose much sleep over the failure to take maximum points.

The head coach said: “It’s not even about finishing, there was some great goalkeeping and inches here or there (making the difference).

“Yes, it’s frustrating for all concerned. We should have won but we didn’t, but it’s a point and a clean sheet.

“We look forward and we’re in a good place. It’s all smiles around the place at the moment, but there’s a twinge of ‘we should have got more’.”

He added: “We’re on 53 points so we’re still nine

clear of the bottom four, but they’ve all got to play each other and there’s only four games to go.

“We’ve also decreased the gap to the team above us. Even though it’s not what we wanted, we’re closer.”

Despite Wimbledon’s position in the table, they are a side in good form.

Robinson had expected them to sit deep and frustrate, but was pleasantly surprised with the amount of control the home side exerted on the game, which led to almost every outfield player having a sight of goal.

He said: “You have to give AFC respect for what they’ve done over the last few weeks, but I don’t think many teams have dominated the game (against them) like we did.

“It was a really good performance and when you have so many chances for so many players it shows you how dominant we were all over the pitch.”
