JOSH Ruffels admitted he had no control over his delirious celebration after scoring Oxford United’s dramatic late winner.

The left back scorched a 94th-minute shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to seal a 2-1 win against Wycombe Wanderers.

It was a huge moment, which got the U’s to within one win of realistically being safe from relegation.

And Ruffels sprinted towards the North Stand, ripping off his shirt – an offence which saw him booked.

“I’ll take the card all day long, I couldn’t care less about that,” he said.

“It was an out-of-body experience.

“I just turned round and the emotion was crazy after that.

“I had a feeling it was really late.

“I think when we had a goal kick someone said there was a minute left, so when Jord (Jordan Graham) pinged it out to me I just thought ‘I’m not going to get another chance’.”

Remarkably, four of Ruffels’s 13 career goals have come after the 90th minute.

But given the context of United’s battle against relegation, this topped the lot.

He said: “It’s probably the best moment of my career, by far.

“The importance of the game, the pressure to get the three points at the moment was huge, so to score like that – the relief was the best feeling.”

The sense of elation was made all the more powerful because Ruffels had feared he would be the villain, after conceding a penalty in the first half with the score at 1-1.

Fortunately, Joe Jacobson fired wide of Simon Eastwood’s goal.

Ruffels said: “I was just praying ‘please, just miss’.

“But I’d have backed Easty to save it if it was on target.

“It’s just one of those things as a defender you’ve got to learn from.

“Hopefully I won’t do that again.”
