OXFORD United's two-goal hero Phil Trainer says he'd been urged to have a crack by so many people whenever he got a chance.

The former Moor Green midfielder hit two great goals in Saturday's 2-1 win over Stafford Rangers at the Kassam Stadium.

The first, just before the break, was a rifled low angled shot from the left, and the second, just 19 seconds into the second half, and with many in the crowd urging him to have a pop, a 22-yard drive into the top left corner.

Afterwards, Trainer admitted: "To be fair, all the coaching staff have been saying, anywhere near the edge of the 18-yard, just shoot.

"It was nice to get the second goal, it calmed the lads down and we started passing it around well in the second half.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was going in.

"Every time you get the ball on the edge of the box, the crowd are shouting 'shoot'!

"But it definitely helps the confidence when they go in like that. You're buzzing after two goals!"

It's been a big step-up for Trainer, who was a plumber and part-time player with Birmingham club Moor Green before the U's snapped him up in the summer. Yet he's revelling in his opportunity to be a professional footballer.

"I'm really enjoying it here at the moment with better players around me, and Jim and Darren are great people.

"The football's a bit more physical, but you get a bit more time to play, to be fair. the lads here like to play so it's all good really.

"We've done well. We were a bit unlucky at Cambridge, I thought we could have got at least a draw, but three wins out of four isn't too bad."

Said manager Jim Smith: "We know Phil can do that, he's done it in training and did it in pre-season in one game here.

"He took his goals extremely well, they were great strikes and he's got a great left foot. And I think there's more goals in him."
