Cricketers' Barry Townsend was crowned singles champion for the first time with a 2-0 win over White House's Mick Berry at the Greene King Oxford & District League finals night at Rover Cowley Sports & Social Club, writes ANDY BEAL.

With both players having qualified for the final for the first time, Townsend set four dolls in the opening leg.

Berry hit back with a four to take the leg into a three-stick shoot-out.

Townsend set again with two, which Berry matched once again to take the leg into a one-stick shoot-out.

Both players missed with one stick, so it was back to six.

Townsend set a formidable five, and Berry fell one short with four.

Berry then set the second leg with four dolls and this time Townsend responded with four to take the second leg into a three-stick shoot-out.

Berry started with one doll, but it was not enough as Townsend clanged off his first two to take the title.

In another exciting final, George pipped Garsington Sports Club 2-1 in the Greene King Cup.

George set the opening leg with an impressive 31 with Den Butler hitting a six.

Garsington Sports responded well with lead man Barry Ruffels whipping of a six, but still fell two dolls short with a score of 29.

Garsington then set the second leg with 26 which didn't seem to be enough.

However, the George started off badly and fell that short that their anchor man didn't even throw.

The stage was set for the final leg with Garsington Sports deciding to set, and steady throwing saw them score 28.

George's first two players racked up nine, but their next three manged only seven, leaving 12 needed for victory from their remaining three.

Steve Walton clanged off a six to leave anchor man Willy Waite needing three to win, which he achieved with a stick to spare to give George the cup.

Paul Sawyer and Ray Townsend (Red Lion Islip) defeated Fairview's Alan Gardiner and Glyn Millard 2-1 to take the Lower Pairs title.

The first leg was tied 7-7 with the Red Lion winning it on three sticks.

Fairview took the second 8-7, and then set five in the final leg.

Sawyer whipped off four dolls leaving teammate Townsend to hit the two winning dolls and take the leg 6-5 with sticks to spare.

Millard had better luck in the Ted Houghton Singles, beating Golden Ball's Sam Turner 2-1.

Millard won the opening leg with a set of four, but lost the second leg after only setting one.

Turner could then only set one in the final leg which Millard passed with ease.

Dave Sawyer and Kevin Giles (George) defeated Phil Wilkins and Den Sellar 2-1 in the Oxford Pairs.

With the game all-square at a leg each, Cricketers set six in the final leg.

When Sawyer opened the reply with two, it seemed to be enough, but Giles whipped off five dolls to take the leg and cup.

Oxford United's football community officer Peter Rhoades-Brown presented the trophies.
