BIG chub and perch figured in the final matches of the river season last Sunday when conditions were decent for once.

The Cherwell was nicely coloured at Thrupp for Kidlington’s Last Chance Cup and Henry Clarke made the most of the conditions to catch four good chub for a win ning 17.13.0.

All fell to lobworm fished with a chopped worm feeder, the best chub scaling 5.6.8.

Two chub, including one of 5lb, on pole and maggot, helped Terry Lester to second place with 5.12.0, while a bream of 4.8.0 and a perch on pole and maggot ensured Paul Jackman was third with 5.7.0.

The final points winner was Jason Bean.

Final table: 1 J Bean 114pts, 2 T Lester 108, 3 H Clarke 87, 4 P Jackman 70.

Nine anglers fished Mars-ton AC’s finale on their section of the Cherwell upstream towards the Oxford boathouse.

Once again it was the river’s big perch that produced the top weights.

Graham Bradshaw was a clear winner with 14 of them for 15.14.0, all falling to pole and chopped worm, half at 14 metres and the others close to a nearside bush.

Second-placed Luke Shepherd struggled for a bite for three hours, but persevered with chopped worm on the pole and was rewarded with four good perch for 5.2.0.

Anthony Tomkins was third with a mixed bag of roach and perch on pole and maggot over groundbait for 4.7.0.

Cuddesdon Mill’s final Open was fished on the Thame at Drayton and featured some clonking chub.

Nick Baker had two, including a cracker of 6.0.0, in his winning weight of 10.2.0. They fell to bread, fished under a loafer float and also on the lead.

Second-placed Rodney Dawkins caught two chub on legered bread for 10.1.0, while a 5.5.0 chub, also on bread, gave Kevin Smith third place.

The club’s AGM is at Garsington Sports & Social Club on Easter Monday (7.30pm).

Ten Tackley Estates members were on the Cherwell at Hog’s Bottom, Stephen Malone emerging the victor with a 3.13.0 chub on legered bread.

Mick Merry was runner-up with a 3.4.0 bream, and John Spencer third with a 3.3.0 chub. The rest blanked.

Sutton Courtenay AC held their Committee v Members Cup match on the Otneys stretch of the Thames at Abingdon.

The weather may have been good, but the fishing was rather less so, only four weighing in.

Steve Talbot triumphed with 11.10.0, followed by Alan Hewer with 4.4.0 and Graham Boyes with 2.3.8.

Tony Gee was the winner of Oxford Waltonians’ final match on the Thame at Cuddesdon Mill. He had a chub and bits on pole with maggot and caster for 3.14.0.

Mick Baston was second with a 3lb chub on pole and worm, followed by Paul Bowers with a chub and a dace for for 2.14.8.

The penultimate match in the Masons AC points league was fished on the Oxford Canal at Grovelands.

Jason Smith found some good perch by feeding chopped worm and caster with worm on the hook for a winning weight of 9.9.0.

Bob Yeomans had perch, skimmers and roach for 7.13.0, followed by Martin Robinson with 3.3.0. Eight fished.
