Stuart Walford provided the first of a quartet of wins for the host gym as the Oxford Boxing Academy staged their first dinner show of the season at the Kassam Stadium.

But it needed a terrific tussle with Gloucester’s Todd Rob-erts before he saw his arm raised in triumph.

Walford had to claw back a considerable deficit after his rival claimed the first two sessions of this welterweight encounter with accurate two and three-punch clusters to both head and body.

As the bout entered the second half, the Academy boxer started to string together neat hook combinations off the jab to clinch the decision.

Steve Rees claimed a second win in the same division by getting behind the jab and landing the more decisive shots to outpoint Welwyn Garden City rival Daniel Mitchell.

Occasional switches to southpaw during the second half of the clash gave Chris Wood the edge over game Haringey battler in a highly tactical four-round middleweight encounter.

And the same approach reaped dividends for Daza Usher, who showed more determination to gain the edge over Aston’s Joe Campbell in their tense welter battle.

The show opener between Ben Kaluza and Woking’s Aaron Buff had set a high standard for the evening after the pair delivered a thrilling teenage lightweight battle.

Buff used his extra height – especially on the counter – to have the edge on quantity and claim the decision, but Kaluza’s quality was evident throughout.

Southpaw Mitchell James began briskly, but lacked the variety demonstrated by Cheshunt rival Silas Kituba, who imposed two counts – both from right hands – on his way to a unanimous verdict.

There was little to separate the pair after the first session of the middleweight clash between Rob Pidduck and Brandon Buckland.

But the taller Thame man’s better delivery edged him ahead in the final two rounds to claim the decision. Oxford University southpaw Richard Briggs made full use of his extra height and imposed a standing count – prompted by a crisp right in the closing minute – on his way to collecting all three votes over Jeremy Heaney after their light heavy clash.
