CITY of Oxford confirmed their status as one of the country’s elite clubs with four members taking part in the Flanders Speedo Cup, in Antwerp.

Connor Bryan, Dan Jenkins and Kenji McDade represented Swim England South East, with David Murphy taking part as a member of the Great Britain squad.

A world-class gala had representation from almost 20 countries, with two Olympic gold medallists, Joseph Schooling – Singapore’s first champion – and three-time winner Katinka Hosszu, as well as world record holder Marco Koch in action.

But the four City of Oxford members did themselves proud.

Murphy made all three breaststroke finals, coming fifth in the 100m, seventh in the 200m before agonisingly missing out on a medal in the 50m, finishing fourth – only denied bronze on the touch.

Bryan produced a superb display to make the 50m breaststroke A final, where he came eighth.

But his outstanding display came in the 100m breaststroke B final.

After qualifying fourth fastest, Bryan was a cut above his rivals to claim a memorable victory, coming home almost half a second in front of the field in a time of 1min 4.86secs.

Jenkins and McDade defied their seedings, putting in good performances against more experienced international rivals.
