NATHAN Douglas bagged a sixth national title at the British Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

In winning the event, the Oxford City AC triple jumper sealed his place in the Great Britain team for the European Championships in Berlin.

It was the first time Douglas had won both the indoor and outdoor titles in the same season.

Oxford City heptathlete Alice Hopkins was crowned South of England champion after winning gold at the South of England AA Combined Events Championship at Horspath.

Eddie Pepperell recorded a sensational sixth place finish at the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie.

It was the Abingdon golfer’s highest finish in a major.

Oxford United endured a slow start to their summer recruitment drive, but bolstered their front line with two additions.

Gavin Whyte signed a three-year-deal after scoring 23 goals in 20 games for Northern Ireland side Crusaders the previous season.

Former Premier League striker Jamie Mackie also signed for the U’s, who started their pre-season preparations with a gruelling training camp in Ireland at the beginning of the month.

AUGUST

WITNEY Swifts landed an historic double, after winning the Airey Cup and OCA League Division 1 title.

After securing the league title on the Saturday, an inspired performance from Charlie Fisher helped the club win the cup on Bank Hol- iday Monday – 63 years on from their last triumph.

Oxford Downs secured the Cherwell League Division 1 crown, while in the Home Counties Premier League, Oxford and Thame were both relegated from Division 1, while Shipton finished bottom of Division 2.

A 1-1 draw at Sunderland gave cause for optimism, but defeats to Coventry City, Walsall and AFC Wimbledon left the side second from bottom.

The U’s welcomed Premier League champions Manchester City to the Kassam Stadium, falling to a 3-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup, though fans could be proud of their efforts.

Gavin Whyte and 16-year old Slavi Spasov enjoyed goal scoring debuts.

Competing in the age 17-21 competition, the 20-year-old finished with an overall score of 103.100.
