MATT Lawday has become the first Oxford City Stars player this summer to re-sign for next season.

The 28-year-old forward scored 21 goals for the club in his second year at Oxpens.

And it did not take long for Lawday to agree to a third campaign.

He said: “It feels good to be back for another season and with the new structure within the club and the step up to ENL1.

“It was a no-brainier for me – we have the best fans in the league and we should all get ready for an exciting season ahead.”

It is the first signing since Simon Anderson was brought back to the club last month.

Although the head coach has not coached the goalscorer before, he knows all about what Lawday brings to the side.

Anderson said: “I’m really excited to work with Matt.

“He is a player who I have kept tabs on every time I have coached in the UK.

“Matt is a smart player with a scoring touch and a kid who just wants to learn and get better.

“He will play a pivotal role this season and I hope he recreates the scoring touch he had in Solent when he played at this level the last time.”

Meanwhile, Stars are gearing up for Darren Elliott’s testimonial this weekend.

Legends past and present have signed up to play in the match on Sunday, June 16.

Face-off is at 5.30.
