OXFORDSHIRE’S No 1 golfer Eddie Pepperell, from Abingdon, may not have been involved on the final day of the US Open at Merion, after failing to make the cut, but two of his supporters made quite an impact.
His dad Ron and Eddie Cavanagh, who manages the College Oak pub in Abingdon, were among the first people to congratulate winner Justin Rose, England’s first major champion in 17 years.
The pair were captured live on television having a photo taken behind the scenes with the Englishman, just seconds after his victory was confirmed.
Ron and Eddie are pictured, with Justin in between.
Eddie Pepperell said: “Dad had some passes which I gave out which got them in anywhere.
“They just happened to be there when it all happened.
“There were a few tears, I think – from my dad, not Justin!”
