JONNY Cater insists confidence is still high as Oxfordshire target a place in the quarter-finals of the Unicorns Trophy.

The county travel to Lisvane CC to face Wales on Sunday in the 50-over knockout competition, having beaten Bedfordshire in the first round earlier this month.

Oxon head into the match on the back of last week’s double defeat at Buckinghamshire in the Unicorns T20.

It all but ended their chances of topping the Group 2 table, but captain Cater is upbeat ahead of a change in focus to the one-day format.

He said: “Last weekend was disappointing.

“We felt we underperformed across all elements of the game, however Bucks played extremely well and on another day that could have been us.

“Moving on to this weekend, we look at each format differently and the last game against Bedfordshire was a really strong performance, everyone contributed which was lovely, and we go into this week high on confidence.”

Oxon make two changes from the opening round.

Jordan Garrett comes in for his first minor counties appearance of the season, while Abingdon Vale seamer Joe Butcher is recalled.

They replace batsmen Tom Condon and Harry Smith in the 12-man squad.

Cater added: “We feel in the longer format we need a third seamer and Joe’s part of the 12 this week – we’ll make our final decision on Sunday morning.

"But he’s been playing really well, gone away and worked on his game and we’ve been happy with how he’s been performing.”
