BEN Charlesworth scored a superb century, but his fine innings proved just a consolation as England Young Lions suffered defeat in Cox’s Bazar.
They lost by 63 runs to hosts Bangladesh U19s in a one-day match at the Sheikh Kamal International Stadium on Saturday.
Charlesworth, educated at St Edward’s School, who plays his club cricket with Oxford having formerly featured for Abingdon Vale, scored 115 runs off 149 balls, including ten fours and a six, as England looked to chase down their opponents’ 266/9.
But the Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire batsman’s fine knock proved the only highlight for the visitors as just two other Lions players scored more than 20.
Charlesworth became the eighth man to fall when caught by Rakibul Hasan off the bowling of Asadullah Galib in the 45th over.
The Lions lost their last four wickets for just two runs as they were dismissed for 203.
The side are next in action on Thursday for the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.
Meanwhile, former Banbury batsman Kurtis Patterson scored his maiden Test century during Australia’s 366-run victory over Sri Lanka.
The 25-year-old, who played for the Home Counties Premier League side in 2016, hit an unbeaten 114 off 192 deliveries in the first innings at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
