NATHAN Douglas hopes to recapture some of the magic from his last European Indoor Championships appearance when he goes for glory this weekend.

The Oxford City AC triple jumper travelled to Glasgow yesterday for one of athletics’ major events.

Douglas has not competed in these championships since he won silver in Birmingham in 2007.

The 36-year-old recently posted a video looking back at that success.

And Douglas, whose career has been hampered by injury, is looking forward to pulling on a Great Britain vest again tomorrow evening when he attempts to reach Sunday’s final.

He said: “It’s a fond memory and I hope a bit of that magic can rub off this year, I would take it that’s for sure.

“A lot has gone on in those 12 years.

“To be back out there is brilliant and the last one was on home turf, so for this event to be as well is great.

“It’s a great occasion and I honestly can’t wait to get out there.”

He added: “I love representing my country, regardless of the competition or how many times.

“I always enjoy putting on that vest.”

Douglas headed into 2019 off the back of one of the best seasons in his 15-year senior career.

He won the indoor and outdoor national titles – the first time he has done so in the same calendar year – as well finishing fifth at the Commonwealth Games.

Douglas secured his place in Glasgow when jumping 16.27m to finish second at the British Championships earlier this month.

He heads into this weekend with only two indoor competitions under his belt, but is heartened by his sixth place at last year’s outdoor European Championships in Berlin, where he was just 7cm off third place.

“It’s definitely possible to win a medal,” said Douglas.

“But you know how I work, my focus is on getting through qualifying.

“It’s not promised to anyone to get through that, sometimes it can be tricky.

“Once you get to the final it’s quite open, there’s favourites, but one of many could win it.

“I think it could be a really good competition, like it was in Berlin.”

Douglas knows he will need to be at his best to challenge for a medal in Scotland.

But he also has his sights on the IAAF World Championships later this year and, although he would still have to finish in the top-two at the national trials in August to qualify, jumping the standard of 16.95 would boost his chances.

“When I’m asked how far I’m able to jump, I often throw it back and say how long is a piece of string,” he said.

“But I’m always looking to get back over 17m.

“As much as I want to go to Glasgow and do well, I have one eye on the summer and going to the World Championships.”

The triple jump competition starts at 8.25pm tomorrow.
