Hatti Dean, the former Radley Ladies athlete, missed out on a place in today's 3,000m steeplechase final in Osaka, Japan, by the slenderest of margins.

Dean was denied a fastest losers birth by 0.8 seconds.

Ireland's Roisin McGettigan led for the first 2,000m of her heat and secured a place in the final with a fourth place finish just ahead of Dean in fifth, whose 9mins 43.23secs was not enough to grab a lucky loser berth from the three heats.

"They all went off very fast and I felt if I didn't do the same I would regret it," said Dean.

All the fastest losers came from the third heat - and to run salt into the wound, Dean's time was quicker than the winner of the second heat.

Meanwhile, Kelly Sotherton revealed her disdain for Lyudmila Blonska after she finished third in the heptathlon behind the Ukrainian who has returned to the sport following a failed drugs test.

The Birchfield Harrier said: "I think you can see by the reactions from the other athletes that we are not interested when she is there. We don't support cheats."
