JADE O’Dowda marked her Great Britain debut with an impressive performance in Madrid.

The Oxford City teenager, competing against athletes from France, Spain, Czech Republic and Poland, finished fourth in the Under 20 women’s pentathlon at the Indoor Combined Events International.

The youngster was just pipped by British teammate Holly Mills in the final event – 800m – for the bronze medal.

She beat her personal best by three points to score 4,016, which saw O’Dowda finish ahead of Holly McArthur, who will represent Scotland in the heptathlon at April’s Commonwealth Games.

The City athlete helped Britain finish second behind Poland.

Meanwhile, O’Dowda’s training partners had a good weekend at the London Senior & U20 Games at Lee Valley.

City’s Ella Turner won her 400m heat in a best of 57.02secs, while Alice Hopkins, of Radley, set a new mark of 8.73 in the 60m hurdles.

Aiden Whiting, in his first competition of the year, recorded a best of 9.12 in the male equivalent.

GEMMA Bridge finished second in the 3,000m race walk at the Indoor Elán meeting in Bratislava, Slovenia.

The Oxford City athlete clocked an indoor best of 13mins 25.39secs, which was only eight seconds off her outdoor time over the same distance.

OLIVIA Martin claimed fifth place at the South of England AA Championships in Brighton.

The Oxford City youngster crossed in a time of 11mins 6secs in the under 13 girls event.

Clubmates Benjamin Sims and Henry Channon finished 20th and 44th respectively in the boys’ equivalent.

Abingdon’s Jack Shayler produced a fine performance to finish 25th in the under 20 men’s race.

Lucy Rycroft, of White Horse Harriers, also impressed, coming 30th in the ladies equivalent, with Abingdon’s Lottie Siddle 39th.

ABINGDON'S Paul Hughes battled through the mud to finish ninth at the Slaughterford 9 near Chippenham.

THE fourth round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League takes place at Lawns Park, Swindon, on Sunday, starting at 9.55am.
