Oxford Harlequins, fielding 11 players aged under 21, paid the price for indiscipline as they went down 73-11 at high-riding Newton Abbot in National 3 South West.

They had two players yellow-carded in the space of five minutes and having to play 15 minutes with 13 men proved too much.

Newton Abbot went ahead with a try from lock Colin Stewart, converted by Rob Avery-Wright, but Quins replied with a Will Hilton penalty.

Quins forwards were more than a match for the big home pack early on, prop Sean Brook and lock Adam Neal to the fore, but by half-time, Newton Abbot were ahead 26-11, courtesy of converted tries from Peter Mortimer, Kevin Dennis and Alex Moore.

Quins, who lost outstanding flanker Charlie Ward with an ankle injury on 30 minutes, replied with another Hilton penalty and a fine try from left-wing Alan Johnson in the corner.

Tries from Josh Smith and Jake Monington, one converted by Avery-Wright, put Newton Abbot out of sight and then yellow cards in the space of five minutes for Quins replacement No 8 Conner MacCaffery and wing Alan Johnson increased their problems.

The home side cashed in with three tries from Eddie McGinley, Pete Mortimore and Nick Holt, all converted by Avery-Wright.

Quins steadied the ship with new halfback pairing of scrum half Alban Edwards and Will Hinton gelling well, but two further converted tries killed them off.
