The first round of a new Oxford Winter League is being fished tomorrow and 28 anglers took part last week’s practice on the Clifton Hampden stretch of the Thames.

The river was carrying extra water and some colour, while a howling downstream wind also made it difficult.

The pegs below the hotel were the prime sites and the top two came from here.

Matt Herbert (Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths) drew the peg below the hotel and fished a topper float with caster over groundbait to catch one big chub and a fine net of roach for 20.0.0 and top spot.

Teammates Tony and Tom Hobbs were second and third.

Tony was on the peg below the winner and used pole and maggot for 17.5.0 for second place, while Tom returned 14.12.0 of roach on pole and maggot.

Fourteen fished Littlemore AS’s Chairman’s Cup on the Thames at Sandford, producing a total weight of 42.9.0.

With the river carrying an extra few feet of water, anglers needed a slack in the margins to tempt anything.

Brian Hutchings found a shoal of roach and caught them on pole with hemp and tares for a winning 14.2.0.

Stuart Yates fished his first match and also had a net of roach and perch on hemp and caster for 6.14.0, followed by Mark Shepherd with 6.5.0.

Beehive AC staged their Freight Shepherd Cup at the prolific Frobury Farm and more than 540lb hit the scales.

Kevin Jeacock led the 15 anglers home with 87.4.0 of carp and tench to pole and maggot, followed by Bob Alder with 67. 8.0 of carp to pole, maggot and pellet.

Third-placed Chris Dingle had 56.9.0 carp and tench.

Masons AC held a points match on the Thames between Folly and Long Bridges, also taking on Marston FTB.

Bob Yeomans (Masons) took top spot with bream and skimmers on the feeder for 18.10.0.

Marston’s Alan Tomkins was runner-up with 12.5.0, while Steve Wildman (Ma-sons) was third with 9.12.0.

Teams: Masons 44.9.0, Marston 37.3.0.

Sunday saw the culmination of the Dynamite Oakfield Summer Matchman League with the top ten anglers going into an A final on Red Kite Lake and the next ten into the B final on Swallow.

Gary Keetley won the A final with an excellent weight made up of F1’s to 3lb and some better carp to 6lb Winner of the B final was Richard Ives, who fished corn on the pole to take a mainly carp net, with fish to 9lb.
