THE Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Blue team pipped their Red counterparts in the final round of the Oxford Summer League to take the title.

The finale was fished by eight teams of six on a sweltering Medley stretch of the Thames.

The river was carrying plenty of flow and a tinge of colour and the anglers had to put up with swimmers – some with cosumes and some without – plus numerous boats.

Roach were once again the main target and they figured in winner Paul Glenfield’s bag of 19.14.0.

He was pegged below Godstow Lock and also caught some dace and a 2lb tench on a 5m pole with maggot on the hook and feeding hard balls of groundbait.

Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths teammate Steve Townsend also caught roach and dace on pole and caster for 15.12.0 for second place, which he shared John Hassler (Isis). His bag included a 5lb bream on pole and maggot.

Tom Lane (Shakespeare) was fourth with 14.10.0.

Teams on the day: 1 Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Blue 38pts, 2 Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Red 36, 3 Isis 28.

Final league placings: 1 Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Blue 165pts, 2 Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths Red 163, 3 Shakespeare 150.

Individual points winner: J Hassler 34.

The tenth match of the 2012 Carp League was held at Ridgeway on the white and blue lanes and produced some good weights from the 17 anglers, despite the high temperatures Mat Ryman (Predator) fished shallow for the first half, taking the odd carp on pellet, then switched down the edge using paste and maggot to tempt carp to 10lb. He had a total of 42 fish for a winning 236.8.0.

Ivan Graham (J&K Tackle) fished his top kit down the edge for an all-carp bag of 193.8.0, closely followed by Mick Lane with 181.3.0 on maggot over groundbait.

North Oxford AS entertained Marston AC FTB on a very busy Oxford Canal at King’s Bridge.

North Oxford match secretary John Coleman led them home with 4.13.0, comprising a 12oz roach, plus bits, on red maggot over hemp.

Darren Tompkins (Marston) caught a 2lb skimmer and bits on maggot and casters for 4.9.0 and second place, followed by Marston’s Antony Tompkins with 4.1.0 of bits on maggot.

Marston won overall with 16.4.8 to North Oxford’s 14.6.8.

Littlemore’s RC Smith Cup on the Thames at Sandford was another quality roach match, producing a total weight of 126.6.0 from the nine competitors.

Alan Campbell used hemp and tares on the waggler for a winning 26.4.0, pipping Pete Clarke, who was kicking himself for not getting on the waggler earlier.

He spent two hours on the pole with maggot and caught small roach, but a switch to the waggler brought in some better fish and a total of 25.2.0.

Gerald Perks was third with 17.12.0 on waggler and caster.
